 Advertising Curriculum

We know it when we see it. We are exposed to it thousands of times every day. Most of us are reasonably good, although seldom perfect, at distinguishing it from other kinds of messages. It is something that we tend to take for granted, seldom thinking about what it is or how it came into existence. But what is this thing called advertising?    More……

 Advertising Terminology On The Internet

User session : A user session is someone with a unique address that enters or reenters a Web site each day (or some other specified period). A user session is sometimes determined by counting only those users that haven't reentered the site within the past 20 minutes or a similar period. User session figures are sometimes used, somewhat incorrectly, to indicate "visits" or "visitors" per day. User sessions are a better indicator of total site activity than "unique visitors" since they indicate frequency of use.    More……

Brother Is Advertising

In these economic hard times, "Mad Men" and the real advertising world must be deliriously happy to have the work. The US Ad Council co-sponsors many such ads. Judging from its website, the Ad Council seems to have good social goals and presumably gets paid with our tax dollars for their projects. However, government sponsorship for these ads leaves a different taste. This is not a criticism of the messages. Rather, it is a reflection on the huge, and growing, government presence in our lives -- something that is certainly not confined to the United States. Do we really want, or need, our elected officials using our money to persuade us to achieve their agenda?    More……

Content Is Advertising

For all the hype about online advertising, this one point should have been obvious from quite early on. That doesn't mean that banner ads haven't been lucrative for some publishers who place them on their sites -- but it does call into question how long that sort of advertising will last. Sooner or later the advertisers will recognize that they're not getting much bang for the buck. For publishers (us included, mind you), that could mean that an easy vein for revenue goes away -- but the end result should be better. Companies will start to learn that there are better ways to achieve their goals than banner ads.    More……

Is Advertising Worth Saving?

Advertising is still a valuable discipline, but what it needs is a higher purpose. Advertising needs to inspire more than mass consumption, it needs to communicate ideas that inspire action, and participation. The good news is the internet is one of the best mediums ever for the propagation of remarkable ideas, and at their best ad agencies create great ideas that inspire above and beyond the act of passive consumption.    More……

You will often find that many people confuse marketing with advertising or vice versa. While both components are important they are very different. Knowing the difference and doing your market research can put your company on the path to substantial growth.

Traditional Advertising via Google AdWords

Audio ads can run across hundreds of AM and FM stations nationwide. Google's radio network offers two types of campaigns: auction and reserve. In an auction campaign, you set the weekly budget and maximim CPM bid. Your ads will be broadcast based on the available time slots for your price, which is set by the marketplace. Reserve campaigns allow you to reserve the exact time of day and pay the rate card price of the station. Like the online ads, you can target by location or audience, as well as station type or time of day.    More……

Where Is Advertising Going

If you’re familiar with consumer-brand marketing, you know the term “interstitial.” An interstitial ad is one that appears in interstices—that is, between segments of the content that customers want to experience. Like a tollbooth on a turnpike, it forces customers to stop and pay (in the form of time and attention) before proceeding on their desired path. Epitomized by the 30-second TV spot, it’s a concept that captures what advertising has been designed to do in the past, and why customers today go to such lengths to block, skip, zap, or fast-forward past it.     More……
